In this body of work I simultaneously pay homage to, and critique, the Cartesian mode of thinking that has evolved since the Enlightenment. This philosophy has had a lasting impact throughout the world: on industry, architecture, medicine, spatial organization, and the human psyche in general. Many of my photographs are simple meditations on this phenomenon. In others, however, I appropriate (somewhat absurdly) scientific methodology, setting up comparative studies and time-lapses. These photographs reveal the holes in Cartesian logic--the inevitable effect of time, entropy, and chance, all of which fall outside the realm of rational control.
